Sarah
Balakrishnan
is a scholar and writer based in Durham, North Carolina.
Sarah Balakrishnan is a historian of Africa and a prize-winning fiction writer. Her academic work focuses on the imperial encounter in southern Ghana from the 15th through 20th centuries. Her literary writing is about human relationships, racial tensions, and power.
Sarah is an Assistant Professor of History at Duke University. She has held a Presidential Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, and a Postdoctoral Fellowship from the Carter G. Woodson Institute at the University of Virginia. She has also received research fellowships from the Social Science Research Council, the Social Science & Humanities Research Council, the Academy of Global Humanities and Critical Theory, the Philanthropic Education Organization, and the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs.
Sarah holds a PhD in African History from Harvard University in 2020. She also received an MA in History and a certificate in Anthropology from Harvard, and a BA in History and Political Theory from McGill University. In 2018-2019, she was a visiting scholar at the University of Cambridge.
